S14: “The Paiva and its fossils markings”

Summary: There are many European geoparks highlighting the paleontology occurrences, as they arouse the curiosity of the general public. After the visualization of the “Paleontology Geosphere” documentary, in the Arouca Interactive Tourism Store, we leave in direction to the ichnofossils sector of Cabanas Longas and the Paiva river, located in the surroundings of this geosite of international relevance. The trail in the Paradinha schist village guides us to the river beach where we can better understand the local geology through the observation of the fluvial terraces deposits of schist, granite, quartzite and quartz, as well as the well preserved riparian vegetation in the Paiva’s banks.

Notes: This visit can only be done by minibus, thus, in groups of 15, minimum, and 25, maximum. It includes a bus route from the Arouca center to the Paradinha village (19 km). It is recommended that you complement this field trip with the visit to the Geological Interpretative Center of Canelas (CIGC), where you can find some fossil samples of the beings that have done these trails (please find the contacts in the Museums and interpretative units section).
