Arouca Weather Radar

A radar with a view to one of the most beautiful landscapes of the world

We don’t need to climb the tower to be over than 1000 meters of altitude, with our feet on Pico do Gralheiro. The view over the Freita plateau is superb. The Instituto Português do Mar e da Atmosfera (IPMA) made the right choice when installing the third radar of its network. In an interesting way, the building presents us a panoramic floor (the 10th), offering not a superb, but a stunning view. Circulating through the rounded space, and looking towards north, we can see the coastline, from the Ria de Aveiro to Póvoa do Varzim, passing through the Greater Oporto.

If we look to the east, we can see a rocky landscape, having the Freita plateau extending to the imposing mountains of Montemuro, at the back. At southeast, we can see Serra da Estrela, and at south, we are presented with Serra do Caramulo. Having completed the 360 degrees journey, we go back to the starting point, but not before following the coastline, from Figueira da Foz back to Aveiro.

Here, it is possible to receive the visit of anyone wishing to be amazed, as well as of educational activities, so that young people can have the opportunity to learn more about a unique heritage, while raising the awareness of its use and preservation. The responsible for the management of these visits is AGA – Associação Geoparque Arouca, on the basis of a protocol concluded with IPMA.
